ABOUT FB

Welcome to our school

FB was established in 1975 and was the first community college of its kind in Iceland. The college is divided into two schools; a normal day school for pupils who are between 16 and 19 years of age and an evening school for adults. The number of students in the day school is about 1200 and about 600 in the evening school. The college is one of the largest secondary schools in Iceland with a staff of 120 people. Our pupils who enter the college at the age of 16 have completed 10 years of primary education. Final graduation from this college as well as other such colleges or secondary grammar schools in Iceland has proved sufficient for universities and other institutes of higher learning both in Europe and USA. In addition to preparing pupils for various academic studies at university level, FB offers qualifications in specialised branches of vocational learning, nursing assistant, beautician, carpenter, and electrician the last four being recognized and confirmed by the State.

Since 1997 FB has taken part in many EU activities and projects within Erasmus+, Leonardo, Comenius and Nordplus. We have also taken part in several vocational education and training projects with student and staff exchanges and mobilities. For several years now we have welcomed groups of students, teachers and staff from all over Europe. We provide assistance of finding accommodation and help with organizing local transports. In the Icelandic Euroskills‘ competitions our students have done very well in all four trades, receiving Gold, Silver and Bronze.

Our international team are skilled teachers and administrators with full qualifications and several years of experience in EU projects. Our International Coordinator is Mrs Ágústa Unnur Gunnarsdóttir. In our team we have the finance manager and chief accountant. They have the expertise with financial and administrative documents for European projects and have been working with our international projects‘ finances.

In October 2016 FB was awarded the Erasmus+ VET Mobility Charter by The Icelandic Erasmus+ National Agency. It recognises the operational capacity of the school to manage high quality mobility projects. FB has received Erasmus+ accredidation from 2023-2027.

FB’s International Strategy

The vision, role, values and policy of Fjölbrautaskólinn í Breiðholti

FB’s vision is to promote individuals to create the future. The school provides graduating diplomas at the upper secondary level. The values of the school are respect, diversity and creativity.

The objectives of the school are:

  • Every student shall be successful in his or her studies
  • Promoting entrepreneurial spirit, co-operation and responsible living of students and staff
  • Work with integrity, professionalism, transparency and frugality as main factors
  • Establish a close relationship with the local community and build a successful international cooperation with European countries

The goal of international cooperation

We view international cooperation as a way of offering top quality vocational studies, strengthening the image of the school and promoting increased participation in arts and crafts. Mutual visits contribute to increase quality of study and increase job satisfaction among students and staff.

  • In all presentations related to the school, we emphasize the international community and the
possibilities it gives students and professionals
  • Student exchanges are the mainstay of international work. We want to offer art and vocational students a chance to study part of their studies abroad. As a team, we provide students with good preparation in foreign languages
  • We emphasize that the faculty has the opportunity to visit sister schools, companies and institutions abroad, thus acquainting themselves with the top educational issues, as well as the methods in education, teaching and dissemination at the local level
  • We want to strengthen our partnership with schools, companies and institutions in Europe as the school has good reputation amongst them
  • The school and the immediate surroundings will place emphasis on publicizing foreign exchanges and thus communicating to local people and stakeholders how the experience has opened the eyes of participants for new opportunities
  • Usually we send 20 students per year for education and training
